Farmers markets by island

Where to find the best cheap, authentic meal of the trip — one market per island, and what to actually look for.

The best cheap, authentic meal you'll have on the trip

Hawaiʻi's farmers markets aren't just produce stands — most mix genuine agriculture (tropical fruit you won't recognize from a mainland grocery store) with prepared-food vendors selling plate lunch, poke, malasadas and coffee, often at prices well below any restaurant. Building one morning of a trip around a good market is consistently one of the best-value things a visitor can do.

Oʻahu: KCC Farmers Market

The Saturday morning market at Kapiʻolani Community College, near Diamond Head, is Oʻahu's best-known and most food-vendor-heavy market — arrive early, both for parking and because popular stalls sell out.

Maui: Upcountry Farmers Market

Held in Pukalani, Upcountry — reflecting the cooler-climate produce (strawberries, lettuce, root vegetables) that Maui's uplands are known for, distinct from the tropical fruit more typical of lowland markets elsewhere in the state.

Hawaiʻi Island: Hilo Farmers Market

Covered briefly in our food trucks guide — open most days, with the largest selection on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Genuinely one of the best markets in the state for both scale and variety, reflecting the island's strong small-farm agriculture.

Kauaʻi: Sunshine Markets

A rotating weekly schedule of county-run "Sunshine Markets" moves through different towns island-wide — check the current day-by-town schedule before planning around a specific one, since it changes town daily rather than running from one fixed location.
