What actually catches first-timers out
Hawaiʻi's climate is mild and forgiving, which paradoxically makes it easy to under-pack for the few conditions that genuinely surprise visitors: cold mountain summits, sudden windward-coast downpours, and just how much walking on uneven lava rock and reef your feet will do.
The core list
- Reef-safe (mineral) sunscreen — buy it before you land if you can; selection and price on-island are worse. See our snorkeling guide for why this isn't optional.
- A light rain layer — packable, not heavy. Windward coasts get sudden short downpours even on an otherwise sunny day, in any season.
- Real warm layers if summiting Haleakalā or Mauna Kea — both go below freezing before dawn. A packable down jacket, not just a hoodie.
- Water shoes or sturdy sandals — many of the best snorkel and tide-pool spots have a rocky or reef entry, not sand.
- A reusable water bottle — tap water is safe island-wide, and hydration matters more than visitors expect given the heat and humidity.
- One nicer outfit — for a luʻau or a nicer dinner; Hawaiʻi dress code is very casual, but "very casual" still isn't a swimsuit.
- A dry bag or ziplock for electronics — useful on boat trips, waterfall hikes, and anywhere spray or rain is likely.
What you can skip
- Heavy hiking boots, unless you're doing a genuinely technical trail like Kalalau — trail running shoes handle almost everything else.
- A full formal outfit — even upscale resort restaurants in Hawaiʻi rarely require more than "resort casual."
- Bug spray in most areas — mosquitoes exist but aren't the constant issue they are in, say, the Caribbean or Southeast Asia; pack a small bottle rather than a full-size can.
The agricultural inspection rule, again
Worth repeating from our getting there guide: don't pack fresh fruit, plants or soil-contaminated gear (hiking boots with visible dirt from another trip) without expecting a question at agricultural inspection, both entering and leaving the state.
The one thing people actually forget
A physical printed or downloaded (offline-accessible) copy of any timed-entry reservations — Diamond Head, Haleakalā sunrise, Hanauma Bay. Cell service is patchy at several of these exact spots, right when you need to show the confirmation.
